The news corporate media won't touch, stories from the front lines of our movements to fight and build and just a dash of spoken word, visual art and snark. Blend and enjoy.

Dec 30, 2016

It's been a full year of Act Out episodes and it would be a shame to shift into next year without a look back – not just because we're proud of the work we've done but because the powerful activists, artists and movements that we've hosted are and will be an inspiration moving into next year – a raised fist in the face of fascisma fuck you to the powers that be, saying we, the people, are not going to be passive.

A massive display of what we are capable of – the creative ideas, the connections made, the actions we take – ALL of this – in the name of justice, peace – and people and planet over profit.

So, without further ado, here is a look back – for the fight ahead.

This week:

in a special episode, I've got some questions:

What makes a news outlet a Russian propaganda site?

Did the Russians actually hack or leak or in any other way tamper with our elections?

How safe and fair are our elections and could voting machines be used for something more fun – like playing PacMan?

And finally, journalist Mnar Muhawesh joins us to talk real – vs. fake - news.

This week:

The ice is melting, sea levels are rising and science denying psychopaths are steering the canoe.

Next up, seasoned activist Daniel Lee outlines the work cut out for us and the importance of alliances – across all the front lines.

And finally, it's not about what's left to do but what the left must do.

This week:

in a special episode, we dig into the latest news from Standing Rock – from the latest in a violent string of attacks on November 20th that saw protectors shot with concussion grenades and hosed by water cannons in sub-freezing temperatures to the announcement by US Armed Forces veterans that they will self deploy on December 4th to the eviction letter sent by the Army Corps of Engineers the day after Thanksgiving.

This week:

In a special episode, let's talk education – the power of which is so strong, governments will and do withhold it from their own people as a twisted but very efficient form of oppression.

As our access to publicly funded, quality education in this country continues to falter, let's take a look at a group of people barred from knowledge, their reaction and thousands of miles away, a creative response in solidarity, in power - to raise awareness, to educate.

And finally, from the front lines, yet ANOTHER reminder and source of inspiration to get informed, get engaged and rise up.

Next up, capita-list, a capital miss.

Finally, The Next System Project is researching, developing and implementing alternatives to our current system, and wants to hear your thoughts.

This week - a special episode:

Bushra al-Fusail is a Yemeni-American who lived under the ongoing airstrikes in Yemen for months before coming, ironically, to the country that makes the destruction of hers possible.

Far from tucking herself away, she has been working tirelessly both on the streets and in the halls of Congress to raise awareness of the ongoing conflict in Yemen and perhaps most importantly, of the US role in the death and destruction in her home country.

In this special episode, she outlines the reality of war, the backstory of Saudi’s involvement in Yemen, the US role in the war and how we, the people of the US can #RememberYemen and push to end this horrific war

This week marks the 15 year anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001. Let's take a look at what these 15 years have brought us, the results of the war on terror and the terrorists made – on both sides of the story.

Then, this Friday is also an anniversary – the 45th anniversary of the Attica prisoner uprising. And this year, prisoners across the US are commemorating it with their own actions – for human rights and justice.

Next up, join in the fight against the Dakota Pipeline wherever there's a bank and finally,

words of wisdom, power and inspiration from an activist who fought fascism not because she thought she'd win, but because they were fascists.

This week:

The DOJ announced last week that they're breaking up with private prisons. What does that mean in practice and is it enough to make a difference?

Next up, the Olympics might be over for the crowds and the athletes, but it turns out the Olympics are a long-lasting force for many, one that is neither inspirational nor cheerful. Let's take a closer look at the latest host city – and the steep prices paid by not only a crippled economy but a impoverished people.

And finally, people talk a lot about just transitions but do we have any real solutions? Bill Moyer from Backbone Campaign talks about the Solutionary Rail and how we can use old infrastructure to create new opportunities for both people and planet.
