The news corporate media won't touch, stories from the front lines of our movements to fight and build and just a dash of spoken word, visual art and snark. Blend and enjoy.

Sep 2, 2016

This week:

we've got a bit of a spoiler alert for you when it comes to third party spoilers plus

how the quest for knowledge and the weaving of words are building community, self respect and power in one of the US's most impoverished and downtrodden cities, Detroit.

But first, it takes a fool to remain sane.

This week:

The DOJ announced last week that they're breaking up with private prisons. What does that mean in practice and is it enough to make a difference?

Next up, the Olympics might be over for the crowds and the athletes, but it turns out the Olympics are a long-lasting force for many, one that is neither inspirational nor cheerful. Let's take a closer look at the latest host city – and the steep prices paid by not only a crippled economy but a impoverished people.

And finally, people talk a lot about just transitions but do we have any real solutions? Bill Moyer from Backbone Campaign talks about the Solutionary Rail and how we can use old infrastructure to create new opportunities for both people and planet.

We continue with part 2 of our interview with former Philadelphia police captain Ray Lewis and dig into some of the Philly PD's sordid past so as to prepare activists for what they might encounter as we take to the streets for justice and equality.

This week:

A special extended episode featuring voices from what one might think are opposite sides of the front lines: a young black woman and a retired police captain.

In fact, these two may even have run into each other in the city of brotherly love long before they had the fight for justice in common. First we'll hear from creative activist, community builder and social justice advocate YahNe Ndgo about police brutality, systemic racism and movements for change – then we'll give you a preview of next week's special with retired police Captain Ray Lewis – a man who has marched across the police brutality spectrum to stand against injustice from wall street to ferguson.

And finally, a quick shout out to climate justice fighters as they march against pipelines and for people and planet. ---

This week:

Let's take a walk down the aisle – the political aisle that is, and see where we might find some common ground – perhaps there's a unifying factor, something that both sides hold in the highest esteem, that they can't live without, that drives their decisions and shapes their every step.

Next up, the boat for peace in a place of war – Women's Boat to Gaza calls for peace and hi-lights the role of women in the Palestinian struggle for freedom.

And finally, it's berry season so why not celebrate by avoiding these capitalist cronies peddling sweet fruit and bitter discontent.

But first, politics and poetry...

A special look at the video game – yes video game, that takes you inside what it's really like – to live in war.

Next up, if it looks like an article, reads like an article, well then it's – NOT necessarily a real article. We're dissecting the despicable trend of native advertising where ads dress like news so YOU consume more and know less.

But first, some shaded shame...

A wall is a wall until it's – the sky? Ana Teresa Fernandez shows us how we might view things differently, simply through the application of color.

Next up, I'm not one to celebrate a corporatized holiday but this mother's day, leave the chocolates behind and stand up for peace.

And finally, ever wonder where the idea for our militarized police came from? Trial, error and a determined piece of low life scum.

Regulation is the name of the game if you want to hold corporations accountable and keep them in line with the interests of people and planet. Sadly, there's one serious hurdle standing between us and regulation – and it has to do with how much your life is worth.

Next up, find a May Day action near you - and while you're at it, paint and spray your message of change in super villain coup de art.

But first, here's my 2 cents – on 20 dollars

This past week, thousands of people marched and were arrested on the steps of the Capitol demanding that the people’s voice be heard; that we the people, not money, be the driving force of our government.

Democracy Spring organized a full week of actions - rallying, marching and risking arrest.

Democracy Awakening organized the final three days with teach-ins, panels, rallies and marches, wrapping up the events with hundreds arrested on the Capitol steps.

This video covers the whole week - the rallies, the marches, and several of the people involved in this strong show of people power vs. corporate rule

The climate crisis IS a reproductive crisis. The founders of Conceivable Future talk to us about the intersectionality of parenthood and climate change.

Next up, the Drug War has wreaked decades of havoc in our country – but what about Latin America? School of the Americas Watch and the Peace, Life & Justice Caravan hi-light this southern path of destruction and invite you to join in the fight against both the drug war and the violent US-backed crusades in South America, Central America and Mexico.

Finally, let's get cozy and dissent.

From marches to sit-ins to teach-ins and rallies – activism is in full swing and we're giving you the run down of what's coming up on the front lines.

Next, the mere fact that we have over half a million homeless on any given day in the richest country in the world is not only atrocious but absurd. Thankfully, individuals and communities are quite literally using tiny measures to make a difference.

And finally, there are a lot of corrupt 'n greedy crooks who should be doing time – and these inmates want to introduce them to you.

But first, Democracy Springs.

we're standing strong on the front lines – talking no new leases in new orleans, no new permits in Oregon, shutting down a drone air force base and playing whack-a-mole with Monsanto.

Then, from the front lines to the halls of international law, Polly Higgins lays out the parameters of ecocide law and how global change --- starts with a simple concept.

This week, spring is in the air and so is a renewed call for justice, peace and freedom. But before we get to the front lines, let's take a look at what it means to be an activist and what makes a social movement successful.

Next up, on the front lines – Code Pink wants you to stand up against the military industrial complex, and more precisely against the Saudi regime and the lobbying group, AIPAC.

And finally, we can't all live off-the-grid, but we can all make changes that loosen our strong ties to a consumerist, overly commodified lifestyle.

But first, I just gotta riff this right now.
